Modeling through self-assembly
In this paper we explore a new paradigm for modeling geometric structures through self-assembly. This approach is inspired by the new emerging field of nano-technologies. At the very small nano-scales the laws of physics are different from the ones at the scales we are used to in daily life. Gravity is negligible and Brownian motion induced by heat is a crucial factor. In fact the latter provid...
متن کاملSelf-sorting chiral subcomponent rearrangement during crystallization.
The incorporation of enantiopure 1-amino-2,3-propanediol as a subcomponent into a dicopper double helicate resulted in perfect chiral induction of the helicate's twist. DFT calculations allowed the determination of the helicity of the complex in solution. The same helical induction, in which S amines induced a Lambda helical twist, was observed in the solid state by X-ray crystallography. Elect...
متن کاملChiral tetrahedral iron(II) cages: diastereoselective subcomponent self-assembly, structure interconversion and spin-crossover properties.
A new class of chiral tetrahedral iron(II) cages were prepared from subcomponent self-assembly with high diastereoselectivity. The cages can be interconverted through imine exchange. The chiral cages displayed a spin transition close to room temperature, and the transition temperatures were affected by the substituent and uncoordinated solvents.
متن کاملNanostructured Ceramics through Self-assembly
The length scales defining structure and organization determine the fundamental characteristics of a material. Traditional ceramic materials exhibit organization on two length scales: the atomic scale, e.g., the unit cell of the crystal or the local arrangement of amorphous materials, and the scale of the grain size within the composite, typically much longer length and on the order of micromet...
متن کاملMicrofabrication through Electrostatic Self-Assembly
We use electrostatic interactions to direct the patterning of gold disks having ∼10-μm diameters on functionalized surfaces. Planar and curved substrates with patterned surface charge were generated either by microcontact printing or by photolithography. Small charged gold disks were generated by electroplating gold into photoresist molds and derivatizing these disks with charged self-assembled...
